Who Is the Killer in Totally Killer? Ending Explained (2024)

It wouldn’t be the spooky season if we didn’t get some awesome horror movies coming to our screens. Released on Amazon Prime Video, Totally Killer is equal parts slasher comedy and science-fiction. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe), the movie follows a teenager named Jamie Hughes (Kiernan Shipka), who goes back in time to when her mother was her age, to prevent the murder of her mother’s friends. The movie is fun, but it might leave you a little confused. So, let’s take a look at Totally Killer, talk a bit about the ending, and discuss who ends up being the killer.

Be warned, from here on out there will be major spoilers for Totally Killer. So, if you are interested in the film and want to go into it without knowing anything about the ending, turn back now.

What Happens at the End of Totally Killer?

The movie kicks off after the Sweet 16 Killer returns decades later, to finish what they started by killing Jamie’s mother Pam (Julie Bowen). After her mother’s death, her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema) suggested going back in time with a time machine she was working on for a school project. While in a chase with the killer, they stab the time machine, accidentally sending Jamie back to 1987. This gives her a chance not only to save her mother’s friends but her mother as well. Unfortunately, she has a hard time convincing her mom and her friends of the impending danger.

Fast forward to the end of the film, and Jamie hatches a plan to use one of the girls who are fated to die, Marisa (Stephi Chin-Salvo), as bait. Jamie, the teen versions of her parents, and a couple of their friends manage to get the drop on the killer, killing him. It turns out that the Sweet 16 Killer is Doug (Nathaniel Appiah), Jamie’s principal in the future. Doug committed the murders because prior to Jamie traveling back in time, the girls bullied his girlfriend, Trish, getting her quite drunk, which led to her getting into a fatal car accident.

But, Marisa is then stabbed by a different killer, and Jamie realizes that Doug wasn’t the one who killed her mom. She finds out that the podcaster investigating the murders, Chris (Jonathan Potts), was the one who killed her mom in the future. He did it to immortalize the killer and make himself famous, as he was the authority on the murders. Thankfully she manages to kill him too, and she makes it back to the future, where some things have changed.

Does Totally Killer Have a Post-Credits Scene?

The movie does not have a post-credits scene, technically. Totally Killer does have a scene right before the end credits. It’s a montage that explains most of the things that changed because Jamie went back in time. The sequence features pages of notes that were created by Amelia’s mother Lauren, who helped Jamie get back to the future. Lauren took notes on what she thought were big changes so Jamie could acclimate to this new future.

For example, Jamie’s name isn’t Jamie anymore. Her mom and dad got together sooner than they did in the past timeline, and they had a son that they named Jamie instead. So, Shipka’s character is named Colette in the new timeline and she has an older brother named Jamie. Most of the other changes were things that happened to supporting characters, as a direct result of something Jamie or the killer changed in the past. There aren’t any other scenes after the montage, so you can stop watching Totally Killer once the credits begin to roll.

The movie didn’t need any post-credits scenes either. There weren’t any loose threads that an extra stinger could have tied up. Although they probably could have had at least one scene showing what the past looked like after Jamie left, something to leave the movie on a funnier note. It’s a fairly self-contained film, that probably won’t get a sequel unless they follow a vastly different plot. Although, Happy Death Day got a sequel so maybe we’ll leave some wriggle room for this one. You can check out Totally Killer now on Amazon Prime Video.
