Bonfire destroys five outbuildings in Oxford

A FIRE in Oxford spread and destroyed five outbuildings in Oxford last night (13).

Five fire engines from Rewley Road, Slade, Watlington and Abingdon were called to Littlemore around 9.50pm.

The fire which spread involved several sheds, hedges and trees in the rear gardens of six properties.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control before it spread to nearby homes.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘The fire was caused by a small bonfire that got out of control and spread to nearby hedges and trees.

“We would like to remind everyone that in exceptionally dry and hot conditions, even a small bonfire can spread very quickly from a stray ember or dry vegetation.

“The [team] has had a number of fires that have spread from bonfires over the past week and urges the public to consider the dangers of having bonfires at this time, no matter how small.
