BREAKING: Three rushed to hospital after accident shut down Manchester’s main road with huge queues – live updates

Three people have been rushed to hospital following an accident involving a car and a van on a busy north Manchester road. Officers are currently at the scene on the A664 Rochdale Road, near Boggart Hole Clough in Blackley.

Firefighters and paramedics were also present, while eyewitnesses reported seeing an air ambulance land nearby. Emergency services were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m.

The road has been closed since about 3:15 p.m., according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system, and drivers are currently facing queues of about an hour on roads in the region. A cordon is in place between Old Road, in Harpurhey, and Middleton Old Road, in Blackley.

In an update posted to Twitter, a spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester wrote: “ROAD CLOSED. A664 Rochdale Road is closed between Charlestown Road and Moston Lane.

“This is due to a police incident. Divert via Charlestown Road and Moston Lane in both directions. Local bus services are being diverted, please check with your operator.”

Drivers are told to expect traffic jams on other nearby roads in North Manchester as motorists avoid the scene. Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service have all been approached for comment.
