Busy Derby road reopens 10 hours after building fire

A large fire broke out this morning and affected two buildings in the industrial estate on a busy road in Derby. Six fire crews were at the scene on London Road, with two aerial ladder platforms also present when the fire first broke out at around 4.30am on Sunday morning (June 12).

The road was closed for around 10 hours in total and was initially closed between its junctions with Ascot Drive and Raynesway as firefighters worked to put out the blaze, with people being asked to avoid the area. The fire affected the Navigation Tire Service and Hand Car Wash and Opulent Motors Garage next door.

In a Twitter update at 5.30am, the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “@DerbyshireFRS are currently dealing with a large fire on London Road in the Wilmorton area. We have 6 devices and 2 rigs aerial ladders present. The road has been closed, please avoid the area.”

The blaze had been largely extinguished by around 8am, but crews remained on the scene through lunchtime as fire investigation teams inspected the damage and police began their own investigation on the cause of the incident.

A large section of the road was first closed between its junctions with Ascot Drive and Raynesway. A small section of London Road, from Ascot Drive to Alvaston Park, remained closed until around 3pm this afternoon.
