Fire breaks out at a dumpster hire depot near Penryn

An industrial building of a dumpster rental company was damaged by fire.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the fire occurred at Nick Ferris Skip Hire in Longdowns on the A394 road from Penryn to Helston. shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, January 31.

Four pumps from Falmouth, Helston and Tolvaddon were called to the incident.

A fire department spokesman said: “Upon arrival, the first devices requested further assistance and two more devices were mobilized along with a water carrier.

“The pumpers from Falmouth, Helston and Tolvaddon were present, as well as the water carriers from Helston and Wadebridge, and the welfare unit from St Dennis.”

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used hose reel jets and main jets to extinguish the fire.

The spokesman said as of 1 a.m. the fire was under control and the incident was being scaled down.

However, at 7am firefighters were still on the scene and motorists were warned to approach the area with caution as fire hoses were crossing the road.

A spokesperson for traffic management site Inrix said: “On the A394 at Hernis there are pipes running across the road due to a fire on the A394 between Polkanuggo Lane and Lestraynes Lane.

“Traffic is doing well. Morotists are being asked to approach the area with caution. Be aware that hoses are crossing the road to put out a fire at a nearby farmhouse.”
