Saving Lives in Large Bodies of Water Using Helicopter Rescue Training arrives in Jones County on Wednesday, October 27.
Jones County Emergency Management and the Sheriff’s Office partnered with the North Carolina Helicopter Water Rescue Team (NCHART) and NC Marine Fisheries for a water rescue training session at Brock Mill Pond, Wednesday.
The public is invited to attend this training across the pond near Brock Mill House at 212 Market Street in Trenton, North Carolina. There, people will find a fishing pier that stretches out into the water for a great view.
Training will take place at the American Legion Fairgrounds and Brock Mill Pond will be used for water rescue.
If viewers plan to stay for a period of time, personal lawn chairs are permitted. The best time to arrive for the experience and see the helicopters in the air will be around 10 a.m.
Anyone watching the training can expect to see a helicopter perform water rescue simulations in and out of Mill Pond throughout the day from 10 a.m. to noon, said Franky Howard, county manager. by Jones.
He said there will also be boat crews in the pond to help with training.
“This particular helicopter has a 100 to 150 foot rope that will be suspended under the aircraft as they hoist victims to a safe landing zone,” Howard said. “In this case, the fairground adjacent to the pond.”
NCHART is a highly specialized team comprised of the NC National Guard, aircraft and crews from the NC State Highway Patrol. Additionally, NC Emergency Management and local first responders help form a mission-ready ensemble for helicopter rescue.
“The goal is to simulate real water helicopter rescues from large bodies of water such as Brock Mill Pond,” the press release said.
“We are happy to partner and help organize this event in Jones County,” said Howard. “Everyone involved will gain much needed rescue experience that will better prepare them for the real deal when the time comes.”
The NCHART, the state rescue team, is funded by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
