Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the busy pavement after a van, car and truck were involved in the crash shortly before 8 a.m.

Emma and Khiana, “alive and strong”, were horribly burned to death when one of the vehicles caught fire.

A 27-year-old man, who was driving one of the other vehicles, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug-driving and causing death by dangerous driving.

The heartbroken family of the “close” couple, Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire, has now posted photos of the two of them and issued a statement detailing their loss.

They said: “Our family is overwhelmed with sadness and grief at the death of Emma and Khiana under such tragic circumstances.

“They were both dynamic, strong and outspoken people. Emma was about to take Khiana to Bedford Modern School, where she was a bright and popular student.

“Emma and Khiana were as close as any mother and daughter could be.”

They explained that the devoted Emma had “has devoted her heart and soul to caring for Khiana “since the sudden death of her husband and Khiana’s father, Ed, 10 years ago.

“Khiana was at the start of her life and was a beautiful and talented girl.

“We are devastated that they were torn from us when they both still had so much to live with,” the family continued.

“Emma and Khiana will all be dearly missed, but rest assured that they have been reunited as a family.”

A Bedfordshire Police spokesperson said this evening: ‘A man in his 20s from St Neots, Cambs. Who was arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on bail, pending ‘further investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101 or via citing Operation Mabel.

The force said it would be particularly keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage that could help them with their investigations.
