Vauxhall Astra fire destroys car near Queenslie, Glasgow Scotland

Catherine McAffrey, 33, claims the brakes stopped working in the Vauxhall when she, her brother and son were traveling on the M8 in Queenslie, Glasgow. The hood of the car caught fire, forcing the family to abandon the vehicle and drive to safety.

Catherine, who lives in Easterhouse, said Glasgow Live: “I was coming off the freeway and I went to brake, and the brakes were completely dead. I was coming to the traffic lights and the brakes weren’t working.

“I was screaming and my brother grabbed the steering wheel. Then the whole front bonnet caught fire and we had to get away as quickly as possible.

“It was awful. I had my little boy with me, he’s only eight and was absolutely shaking and I was trying to deal with the whole situation.

“We ran across the road to get as far away from the car as possible in case it exploded.

“A family friend was driving past and tried to use his car’s fire extinguisher, but it was too far away at the time.”

The incident was particularly shocking for Catherine, who is also a mum to sons aged 10 and 20 months, as the car had never had any previous problems.

“The car was perfectly fine before this happened, we never had any problems with it,” she added.

“There was no warning light. We’ve had the car for five years and it’s had its MOT and service every year.

“Right now I’m just thinking about the ‘what ifs’. I also have a little boy and what if he was there too and he couldn’t escape.”

She said: “I’ve been really anxious since it happened, fearing it could happen with another car, although logically I know it wouldn’t happen. It could have been much worse, so I’m trying to be positive.

“My son is a bit shaken – he’s also going through all the ‘what if’ scenarios, so I’m just trying to support him.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “At approximately 7.45pm on Sunday August 28, police were called to a report of a car fire on Stepps Road near the M8 junction. Officers showed up to assist. “

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.27pm on Sunday August 28 to a report of a car on fire in Stepps Road, Glasgow, near the M8 motorway.

“Operations control mobilized a device to the scene, which extinguished the fire and secured the area.”
