Wester Hailes cleanup fosters community spirit

Community spirit is still strong in Wester Hailes, but this week more so than most as local residents, businesses, community groups and charities come together to clean up the area.

Organized by Places for People Scotland and with the support of partners such as Edinburgh City Council, Police Scotland, Prospect Community Housing, Keep Scotland Beautiful and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the community action saw many local people get involved in waste collection. , cut invasive vegetation, remove garbage, clean common stairs and paint common garden furniture.

Eager to get involved, students from St Augustine High School came out in force with their waste pickers, eager to volunteer to make a difference in their community. They will be back in the community next week to plant bulbs.

Many local businesses also volunteered their time and resources throughout the week, including volunteers from TC Young Solicitors, Pertemps, Jacobs, Skanska, Currie and Brown, Apogee, Idverde, NWH Group and Bell Group.

Ciara Toland, Head of Neighborhoods at Places for People Scotland, said: ‘The efforts of Wester Hailes volunteers, residents and partners throughout the week of action have been nothing short of amazing, and I want to thank everyone those who took the time to get involved.

“It’s not just about picking up litter, it’s about the shared sense of community spirit and pride that so many locals feel in Wester Hailes, something that has been evident throughout week long. Having had the chance to speak to many people, including conducting an in-home consultation, we gained a good understanding of what people think of their community and heard great ideas to continue improving it.

Chief Inspector Mark Hamilton, local area commander for South West Edinburgh, said: ‘I was really pleased that the local police team supported this initiative and worked with the local community to bring these improvements. This is an opportunity for everyone in the region to get involved and build on the great relationships we already have in the Southwest community.
